On March 23, 30 youth gathered at the YMCA’s Youth Zone for delicious Mac ‘n’ Cheese and an evening of discussion about the potential future park at the corner of McKay and Ste-Catherine. Participants were given Virtual Reality headsets so they could walk around the site and suggest ideas for equipment and arrangement of the potential park. At the end of the event, they voted on which ideas were a priority for them.
After giving their opinions on different elements they wanted to see in the park, the verdict without a doubt was that youth wanted a sports field on the site. Youth too were aware of the resounding lack of sports equipment, and a basketball court and a soccer field were the most in demand ideas from the youth.
The next step will be to accompany these youth to a future Borough Council meeting to ask Mayor Valerie Plante about her plans for sports activities and equipment in the downtown core.
