Organized by the CJE Montreal Centre-Ville, the Brigade Estivale was a group of young adults who volunteered at various community organizations once a week for six weeks during the summer.  The goal of this program was to provide youth with various opportunities to get to know the community organizations of Peter-McGill (downtown Montreal) and contribute to different initiatives and the community sector. During the summer, this year’s Brigade Estivale participants collaborated with members of our downtown community and contributed to the neighbourhood in various ways.

The Brigade team had an informal discussion about volunteering, civic engagement and getting involved in politics with deputee of Westmount-Saint-Louis, Jennifer Maccarone. The participants volunteered at the Innovation Youth Children’s Library, they also assembled sandwiches and Salads for Resilience, and made pies for Chez Doris!

The team received various workshops including a photography workshop from LOVE, they accompanied YMCA Dialogue Intervention workers, and more. The Brigade team also facilitated Bingo with seniors in the neighbourhood. With the seniors of Peter-McGill at Habitations du Fort, the Brigade hosted and played Bingo while engaging in intergenerational discussions and exchanges.

On July 20th, the Brigade contributed to the CJE’s Members’ Council’s community art project. The CJE Members’ Council is a group of young adults that meets bi-monthly during the academic year. Their mandate in 2020-2021 was to create and carry out a project for and by youth.  They chose to focus on social inclusion by inviting the community to contribute pieces of art that expressed their experiences with racism and discrimination. The Brigade contributed by making and offering pieces of art to this project which were displayed on Sainte-Catherine Street on July 23rd. During the art exhibit, community members were encouraged to contribute pieces of art on the spot. The goal of this project was to promote social inclusion, denounce social injustices, racism and discrimination and to create space for dialogue through art.
