The City of Montreal is in the process of creating new regulations to encourage the construction of social, affordable and family housing on the island of Montreal. These regulations aim to build and improve upon the Inclusion Strategy adopted by the city in 2005, by creating obligatory rules for new residential buildings built in the city.
Lack of social housing in Peter-McGill
As you may know, there is a severe shortage of social housing in Peter-McGill, but new condo developments are booming, including the redevelopment of the Children’s Square. While the Inclusion Strategy has resulted in the confirmation of a social housing tower on this site, the process has been rocky and precarious. Stricter regulations could help ensure that social, affordable and family housing units are included on many more new developments in our neighbourhood.
The public consultation process will be starting in the coming months. We will be sure to keep you all informed of upcoming dates and related activities. Let’s participate in large numbers!
