The mission of Women AWARE—Abused Women Advocating for Rights and Equality—is to “assist and empower women who have experienced conjugal violence, through self-help and advocacy, in order to improve their quality of life and to effect social change.” This organization was created by women who themselves made the transition from victims, to survivors of, and finally to activists against, conjugal violence.
The Executive Director works under the supervision of and is accountable to the Board of Directors of the organization. They are responsible for the efficient and effective functioning of the organization. They provide leadership, plan and manage the operations of the organization and plan the programs of the organization.
The Executive Director’s role includes but is not limited to:
- Identify and evaluate internal and external issues which affect the organization;
- Be aware of all aspects and activities of the organization. Understand, organize (whennecessary), and provide support to and improve all our services to survivors;
- Represent the organization and increase visibility with partners and the public;
- Establish a plan of operations which integrates goals and objectives of the organization;
- Ensure the organization meets the expectations of clients, the board and funders;
- Supervise operations for efficiency and effectiveness and manage daily administrativefunctions;
- Supervise planning, implementation and evaluation of programs and services; and
- Understand the organization’s reliance on Peer Support.
Requirements
Knowledge, experience and skills:
- 3-5 years previous experience working in a non-profit organization in an administrative coordinating role;
- Excellent communication skills in writing and spoken in both English and French;
- Comfort using Microsoft Office and Google drive;
- Basic fundraising skills;
- Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with volunteers; and
- A post-secondary degree, preferably in a related field.
Qualities—you are:
- Organized and efficient, with excellent interpersonal skills and positivity;
- Able to take initiative, and also to take direction from the Board;
- Capable of prioritizing and carrying out multiple tasks;
- Able to work with a minimum of supervision; and
- Committed to the organization’s values: feminism, empowerment, anti-oppression and harm reduction in intervention approach and politics.
Extra qualifications (assets):
- Previous service delivery experience, in particular with women of diverse backgrounds;
- Lived experience with conjugal violence; and
- Comfort using Slack and Zoom.
Working Conditions:
- $40,000-$44,000 annually, based on experience;
- Flex time as approved by the board;
- Vacation time and paid statutory holidays as per the vacation policy stated at CNESST;
- Start date: End of October 2020.
