Due to COVID-19, local day centres and shelters that serve the homeless in Peter-McGill are running at limited capacity, and some have had to temporarily close for health and safety reasons. To help address this issue, Resilience Montréal has spearheaded an initiative to offer services and meals to 150 people per day in Cabot Square.
With fewer spaces available that are dedicated to serving the homeless, homelessness has become more visible in Peter-McGill, resulting in an influx of complaints to the Ville-Marie Borough and SPVM, particularly relating to drug use in public space. To address the concerns of Peter-McGill residents and to reduce tension between residents and the homeless, the Ville-Marie Borough has hired two mediators to be present in public spaces in Shaughnessy Village between Guy and Atwater Streets and Sherbrooke and René-Levesque. These mediators, Kelsey and Kyra, are now available 7 days a week from 9am-5pm, to respond to complaints, answer questions and concerns, and to work with the Borough and local organisations towards finding solutions.
