The social housing tower to be built on the Children’s Square (Atwater/Tupper) is growing increasingly precarious. An article was recently published in the Westmount Independent saying that Tower 6 of the development, “could be more condos or a hotel”. Negotiations between the City and the developer have been slow and difficult, due to the high asking price by the developer amongst other issues. A public school and increased green space have already slipped through the cracks under similar circumstances on this site – our community cannot afford to lose this too.
Despite the high price of living downtown, there is currently very little social and affordable housing in the western downtown district of Peter-McGill and no social housing available for families. With 3 public primary schools to be built in the neighbourhood over the next few years, and an 18-month delay on the new social housing regulation proposed by the City, this social housing tower is crucial for the neighbourhood.
Concerned Peter-McGill residents and organisations will be rallying at the upcoming Borough Council meeting, to ask questions to elected officials and show their support for housing solutions downtown, equipped with cardboard red roofs held over their heads.
